| New Musical Director Appointed! |

However it was decided that to fill the position permanently we should advertise the position. We recieved a lot of interest in the position and auditioned several applicants. However it was agreed that Owen demonstarted the qualities and playing experience that we were looking for to build on our current achievements and take the band forward. Owens first engagement with the band will be Silkstone March Contest, where we aim to continue to build on achievements this year. |

| Success at Whit Friday, as band takes two 3rd Section Prizes |
| Once again, the band took part in the world famous "Whit Friday Marches" and took to the streets of Saddleworth and Tameside in Lancashire, via a double decker bus! Mr Barry Thompson agreed to be the bands resident conductor after some gentle persuasion and several players from other local bands not competed joined us to make up the team. Two of of young players, James Wilkinson (3rd Cornet) and Megan Plant (2nd Horn) also made their debuts with the band, and did a great job! After a rather slow start of waiting at Denshaw for over an hour, and then again at Scouthead, we made our way to the Tameside venues, where we completed a further six contests, playing last band at Carrbrook at 11.00pm in the dark! (needless to say, no prizes at this one!). To quench our thirsts, we were welcomed at Diggle Band Club where some much appreciated refreshments were consumed, before heading back to the bandroom. With all the results in, the band took 1st place at the Scouthead Contest and runners up at Drolysden in the third section. Thanks go to Mr Barry Thompson and our guest players for their contributions. |

expect the band put together a varied programme which included tradtional
items, music from the shows, classical items and solo's. For the first
time the band featured its Repiano Cornet player, Hannah Wigley playing
"A Brown Bird Singing". This was Hannah's first time playing
a stand up solo, and she really played well, much to the appreciation
of the audience. Ed Halls peformed "Misty" and Andy Whitham
played "Watching the Wheat". The band were greeted by an enthusiastic audience, who whilst eating Sunday lunch, clapped and cheered the band along (not what we were expecting for a Sunday afternoon). | Pontins Report - 30 Oct 2002 |
| Once again the band has recently
took part in the Pontin's Championships at Prestatyn. The is year the
set work was Eric Ball's "Sunset Rhapsody". Following a tough week of rehearsals, the band set off for Pontin's on Saturday afternoon. With no problems on route the band arrived at the Villa Marina Hotel, Rhyll in good time for the evening rehearsals. All were present and the band sounded on good form. The evenings entertainment was provided by the hotels Kareoke Kings and Queens, not to mention a few of the bands own star performers. Eventually we all retired to bed leaving the party annimals to it. Sunday morning came, bringing with it torrential rain and force nine gales!. This made it really interesting trying to load the bus, and we had to abonden the poor "timps" due to falling slates from the hotel roof. Nonetheless we arrived at Pontins in good time and in one piece. Our turn soon arrived and we were off, giving a soild opening and settling down well. We gave our best and produced some fine solo playing. We played confidentantly and no nerves seemed to show. All the youngsters did us proud along with our more experienced players. Unfortunately when the results came out, we were placed 11th out of 23. Slightly disappointing, but still a good result for the band and a good peformance which may have been worthy of a higher placing on a different day. Lets hope we can keep it up for the Yorkshire Area Championships in March. |
